Oxford: Jan Jansson van Waesbergen, Moses Pitt & Stephan Swert, c.1680. Coloured. 420 x 540mm. Ink mss. pagination bottom right. A map of southern Russia, eastern Ukraine and the Sea of Azov after Isaac Massa. It was originally published by Jan Jansson in 1636 with a new, more decorative state issued in 1646. After Jansson's death the plates passed to his son-in-law, Jan Jansson van Waesbergen. He went into partnership with two English publishers, Pitt and Swart, to produce a twelve-volume 'English Atlas' to compete with Blaeu's. Between 1680 and 1683 four volumes of the atlas and the text for the fifth were printed in Oxford, but the mounting costs were too much. Production ceased and for a time Pitt was locked up in the Fleet Prison for debt, making this state of the map quite uncommon. The differences are van Waesbergen & Pitt's names as publishers and a grid engraved over the map. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 17423

Incisione in rame, mm 390x533, testo latino al verso. Elegante e piacevole carta, tratta da Atlas Novus, arricchita da bei cartigli con stemmi. Isaac Massa, cartografo olandese, si recÚ in Russia e tornÚ in Olanda nel 1609, portando con sÈ una grande quantit? di materiale cartografico originale manoscritto. Questi materiali sono stati la base per una serie di mappe sia di Blaeu che di Janssonius.Ottimo esemplare con lieve ossidazione generale della carta. W. Blaeu, astronomo allievo di Tycho Brahe, fondÚ un'officina per la costruzione di globi nel 1599; quasi immediatamente iniziÚ a pubblicare anche carte geografiche, giungendo nel 1630 alla creazione del primo atlante "Atlantis Appendix" e cinque anni dopo, della prima edizione in due tomi del "Atlas Novus". Dopo la sua morte nel 1638, a cura del figlio Johan si giunse nel 1662 alla pubblicazione del celebre "Atlas Maior" in 11 volumi. Good condition, light general paper discoloration. W. Blaeu, an astronomer and pupil of Tycho Brahe, founded a workshop for the construction of globes in 1599; almost immediately he began to publish maps as well, leading in 1630 to the creation of the first atlas 'Atlantis Appendix' and five years later, of the first edition in two volumes of the 'Atlas Novus'. After his death in 1638, his son Johan published the famous 11-volume 'Atlas Maior' in 1662. In 1672, a fire destroyed the workshop and marked the end of the business.
