Original publisher's composite of twelve hand-colored inset maps showing ancient towns and places of historical events. All of the maps use place names from antiquity. The maps features differences in scale. For example, the map of Alexandria shows the city in close detail with its ports and some buildings clearly delineated while the map of Plataea uses a scaled-back perspective that focuses more on the town's relation to the surrounding geography. The inset maps feature beautiful watercolored outlines in pink around country or regional borders. Blue and brown are used to color in some of the town buildings. Green is used to show the route of Xenophon, the ancient Greek philosopher and commander of the Ten Thousand, a group of mercenaries. Major cities and natural features such as rivers and seas are shown. No date, circa 1836-1851. Map with margins measures 10" x 13 1/4"; actual map area measures 8 3/8" x 11 1/2." The inset maps range in size between 2 1/2" x 1 5/8" and 3 1/4" x 4 1/2." Map is very clean and intact except for slight foxing. The center fold line is original as this map originally came from an atlas. The following is printed beneath the map: "Philadelphia, Blanchard & Lea." "26." is printed in upper-right corner outside of the neatline. Blanchard & Lea (fl. 1836-1851) was a Philadelphia-based publishing house and successor to Matthew Carey & Company. George E.
