Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) was a Brabantian cartographer and geographer. He is known for the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, which was first published in 1570 and is the first modern world atlas of the world. This particular map is one of the few plates that remained unchanged throughout the atlas's entire publication. The map was drawn from the 1564 map of Asia Minor by Giacomo Gastaldi (c. 1500-1566), who was an Italian cartographer, astronomer, and engineer, and Ortelius's own map of Asia from 1567. Copper engraving, mm 350x490, original colour. Paper oxidation, some spots mainly in margins, wavy paper.Beautiful map of Persia from "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum", the first modern atlas of the world. It draws particularly on a map of Asia Minor by Giacomo Gastaldi from 1564, as well as Ortelius' earlier map of Asia, dated 1567.The map shows the Persian Gulf and the eastern portion of the Arabian Peninsula. Persia is in the middle of the maps. To the east is a bit of the modern Afghanistan and Pakistan here named as parts of Tartary and India. The Caspian Sea features prominently, yet it is shown horizontally and indefinitely. Within the body of water is a block of text. It was printed in three states, although the changes between states was minimal, and appeared in atlases from 1570 until the mid-seventeenth century. Coloured; minor paper fault to centrefold at lower margin, light age-toning and soiling to margins, otherwise a fine example. A fine map of Persia after Gastaldi's map of Asia Minor 1564. An interesting note in the text on verso reads (this is taken from the translation of the English text edition of 1606) - In the year of Christ 1369. There was a certaine pety king amongst the Persians, named 'Sophi', who held the city 'Ardenelim' in his possession. This man bragged that he was descended lineally by his ancestors from 'Musa Cazino', nephew of 'Ali Muhamed'. He, the chalise of Babylon being dead, & the contrary faction maintained by the Turks, suppressed by the Tartars, began more boldly and freely to broach his opinions of religion: and because 'Hocemus', the sonne of Aly. From whom he draweth his pedigree, had twelve sonnes, minding to set some marke or badge upon his sects and disciples, whereby they might be distinguished and known from others, he ordained that they would follow him, and be of his religion, should weare a tire under the vaile, which all the Turks do wind about their heads (they call it 'Tulibant') should be of purple colour, and should hang out the middle of the 'Tulibant' twelve hand breadth. A map of Persia by Abraham Ortelius. In Very Good condition, with light plus age toning, two small dark stains, and one small puncture in center. Matted but not framed. w 25.75 in. x h 20.5 in. This map of the Persian Empire by the famous cartographer Abraham Ortelius covers the region from Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea in the west to the oasis towns of the Silk Road in what is now western China. This landmark map of Persia was included in the original Ortelius atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, first produced in 1570. This atlas was the first to present all maps in a uniform format and is considered to be the first true modern atlas. It was highly successful and from its original seventy maps and eighty-seven bibliographic references in the first edition (1570), the atlas grew through its thirty-one editions to encompass 183 references and 167 maps in 1612. Throughout the epic publication history of the atlas, this map was one of only a few that never had any changes made to the original plate. The cartography was based on Gastaldi's map of Asia Minor (1564) and Ortelius's own map of the Asian continent (1567). The map presents an inaccurate shape to both the Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf. Rivers and mountain ranges are displayed, and numerous principal cities and towns are noted. Latin text. 1329350. Arts & Antiques. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 1329350
