12 Antique master prints, titled: 'Industry and Idleness.' - Complete set of 12 plates on 7 sheets: "Industry and Idleness" This series illustrates the rewards of hard work and diligent application and at the same time show the sure disaster of not doing so. Etching/engraving on wove (vellin) paper. Description: Originally published in 1747. These engravings are from "The Works of William Hogarth", published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy in 1822 with the original plates restored by James Heath, engraver to His Majesty. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All 'Hogarth' prints appearing after this date are copies of these original plates. The earlier plates published by Cook between 1796-1803 are made after Hogarth and not the original plates by Hogarth. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'William Hogarth' after own design. William Hogarth (1697-1764) was an English painter, printmaker, social critic and cartoonist. Condition: Very good, given age. Margins a little stained.
