16 Antique prints, titled: 'Historia naturalis dentium humanorum … - Natuurlyke Historie der Tanden van den Mensch …' - ('A natural history of the human teeth . '). A set of 16 very detailed engravings showing teeth, jaws and skulls. Complete with the text. A detailed description (explication) of each print is given in the rear of the book, detailing each numbered item on the images. Copperplate engraving. on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: The first edition of a Dutch/Latin translation (Dordrecht: Blusse, 1773) of the originally English work "A Natural History of Human Teeth". This work is seen as the first real scientific study of the human teeth, with detailed plates. The original edition was published in 1771 in London. The same plates are used in this 1773 edition. Rare. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'I. Fougeron' after 'J. van Riemsdyk'. Ignace Fougeron (fl. 1779) was an 18th century British engraver working in London. The author of this work is John Hunter (1728-1793). The Dutch translation by Pieter Boddaert (1730-1796). Jan van Rijmsdyk (also Riemsdyk, Remsdyke, ca. 1730-1790) was a Dutch painter and (mezzotint) engraver, who settled in England in 1750. Condition: Very good, given age. Prints: separate from the text. Prints in very good condition, with an occasional small stain or some marginal soiling. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
