This 1888 map of Washington, D.C., labeled "Map of Washington," was created by George F. Cram, a renowned American cartographer, offering a detailed view of the capital city at the time and highlighting its early infrastructure, key landmarks, and layout. The map shows Washington's characteristic grid pattern designed by Pierre L'Enfant, with diagonal avenues intersecting with north-south and east-west streets, and prominent avenues like Pennsylvania Avenue clearly marked, along with the Mall and other central areas depicted with rectangular parks and public spaces. A numbered key in the upper-right corner identifies prominent buildings, churches, hotels, and government offices, including the Capitol ("1"), the White House ("12"), Smithsonian Institution ("30"), Treasury Building ("16"), and Washington Monument ("31"). The National Mall and surrounding green spaces, such as Lafayette Square and the Ellipse, are visible in the center, showcasing Washington s dedication to public spaces. To the west, the Potomac River forms a natural boundary with multiple bridges connecting to Arlington and Virginia, while the Anacostia River (Eastern Branch) outlines the eastern portion. Georgetown, in the upper-left, is shown as a separate, well-developed area with its own street grid, and areas east of the Anacostia River show less dense development. An inset in the lower-left corner provides a broader view of the D.C. area and its relationship to Maryland and Virginia. The map hints at early streetcar routes and highlights important bridges crossing the rivers. Designed for navigation, the map features a clear grid system with numbers and letters along the margins and a practical numbering system for buildings and landmarks. The color-coding is simple and functional, with yellow shading for densely populated areas and other colors for open spaces, parks, and water. This map reflects Washington s growth and development as the national capital, emphasizing government buildings and public spaces, and would have been useful for both residents and visitors navigating the city's important streets, landmarks, and government institutions.NOTE THE FOLLOWING BEFORE YOU PURCHASE: This is a GENUINE ANTIQUE VINTAGE 1880s MAP.
