Beschreibung
We offer a stipple engraving by Captain William Baillie, after Nicolas Poussin. The plate is 12 x 14 on ivory wove paper, 15 x 16 ½ . Below the image is the title Cupids Hunting and four lines of verse: 'Why the Timid Hare pursue? Nobler Sport should be your View, Strike the Victor from the Field, To Almighty Love he'll yield.'Also printed below: 'N. Poussin pinx.t, W. Baillie sculp.t, Octr. 20th. 1779.' A rather large stipple engraving by Baillie, with a sensitive approach to form and space. William Baillie (1723 1810) often known as "Captain William Baillie" was an Irish printmaker, known especially for works in the style of, or directly copied from, the etchings of Rembrandt. Usually described as an amateur artist, he was an officer in the British Army until 1761, and later held the post of Commissioner of Stamps. He also acted as an agent for art collectors, most notably Lord Bute. Condition: Print retains its full intact margins, there is a half inch tear at the bottom margin and light surface soiling, but overall it is in good condition. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers PR00215
