Beschreibung
2 Antique prints, titled: 'Historiae Polyporum. Tab. XCII-XCIII.' - Set of two prints showing: 'Drieerleie Slangetjes' (Three kinds of small snakes). Rather than water snakes, this print shows Tubeworms (Annelids or ringed worms), Vejdovskyella comata. From the Fourth Volume, First Part (Vierde deels, Ie Stuk) of "De Natuurlyke Historie der Insecten […]", by Rosel von Rosenhof. Commentary and text for this work were written by C.F.C. Kleemann. Haarlem and Amsterdam: C.H. Bohn and H. Gartman, 1765-1782. This is the much superior Dutch ed. on better paper and even better colouring. Corresponding text pages available on request. Engraving with superb handcolouring on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: C & I Honig Made by 'A.I. Rosel van Rosenhof' after own design. Augustus Johannes Rosel von Rosenhof (1705-59) was a German miniature painter, and naturalist and entomologist. Roesel studied painting with his father and uncle, and later with the renowned Preisler in Nuremberg. While living in Copenhagen, he became inspired by the work of Maria Sibylla Merian. He returned to Nuremberg to devote himself largely to entomological studies and illustration, aided by his wife who hand colored his drawings and his son in law, who assisted in the publishing of his superbly illustrated scientific works. Roesel also did much of the engraving for his works. Very good, given age. Some faint soiling and/or staining in the margin edges. Image faintly browned. Faint offsetting of the opposite text page. A few small dampstains in the right margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. The overall size is ca. 21.5 x 27.5 cm. The image size is ca. 13 x 17.5 cm. The overall size is ca. 8.5 x 10.8 inch. The image size is ca. 5.1 x 6.9 inch. Storage location: C341-15. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 65061
