Exquisite 1850s Steel Engraving - Beautiful Antique Print , Artist: n/a - Engraver: n/a Published by J. & F. Tallis London & New York Kiliaen Van Rensselaer, Dutch merchant and patroon, born in Amsterdam. He was a wealthy diamond and pearl merchant and helped found (1621) the Dutch West India Company, later becoming one of its directors. He was one of the first to develop a patroonship in New Netherland, having purchased a vast tract of land near what is now ALBANY. It was called Rensselaerswyck and comprised a large part of the present-day counties of Albany, Rensselaer, and Columbia. Van Rensselaer himself never visited his estate, which was the largest of its kind, but he sent his cousin Arent Van Curler to manage it. His first name is also spelled Killian. A beautiful elaborate celtic like fleur de lis scrollwork decorative border surrounds the image, typical of a John Tallis type production. 2 little vignettes adorn the image, one on the left which depicts DUTCH TREATY WITH THE INDIANS. The right vignette depicts SURRENDER TO THE ENGLISH. Approximate Image Area Size: 3 3/4 X 6 inches Approximate Size With Decorated Border and vignettes: 6 1/4 X 7 1/2 inches Approximate Overall Size with margins: 7 1/8 X 10 1/2 inches CONDITION: Mild spots on marginal areas, otherwise in Very Good Condition. otherwise Image is clean, clear and sharp with beautiful detail and in Excellent Condition.
