Theatre Playbill. Vertical folio. 10.25 x 26 inches. Printed in red and black. Poster mounted on card protected by plastic sleeve. Small tears with slight loss of at lower right and bottom margins, not affecting text and a little staining and creasing close to right hand margins; otherwise a very good example. A theatrical playbill advertising the annual visit of The Royal Italian Circus ('The Greatest Stage Circus in the World') to the Pleasure Gardens Theatre, Folkestone. The venue is not named but the location of Bouverie Road West confirms its identity. It was opened as the Art Treasures Exhibition in 1886, but as this proved unsuccessful, it was converted into the Exhibition Palace Theatre in 1888, later renamed the Pleasure Gardens (which ultimately closed in 1964). The Royal Italian Circus appears to have taken the name of a famous nineteenth century world wide touring circus, created by Giuseppe Chiarini (1823-97). The playbill also promotes a few other performances, including French Leave on 29 October and Bromley Challenor in two farces, for six nights from 7 November. Are You a Mason ? and Stolen Goods.
