Circa 1870, 4to, 270 x 225 mm, 10½ x 9 inches, red cloth, black and gilt floral decoration, small chromolitho plate of little girl on cover and lettered gilt, 18 pages of text. 18 very good colour plates printed by Kronheim, 6 for each item: A Apple Pie (no I or U, 20 illustrations on 5 plates, plus 1 full page); Dick Whittington; and Fairy at Fountain. Head and tail of spine and corners very slightly worn, tiny hole on upper hinge, endpapers slightly browned, old repair to 2 small closed tears on front endpaper, large photographic bookplate of S. R. Robinson on front pastedown, faint foxing to prelims and guards to plates. Contents otherwise very nice. A very good copy. Fairy at the Fountain is also known as Diamonds and Toads and this version of it has sometimes been attributed to Kate Greenaway. However it seems Warne published 2 versions of the story, 1 by a different illustrator. See Schuster page 41. Mrs Valentine was the general editor of Warne's publishing house and possibly wrote most of the verses for the Aunt Louisa series of books. Not listed in the usual bibliographies, 1 copy in Copac and 1 in the US libraries. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.
