Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, assumed office in 1865 following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. A Southern Democrat from Tennessee, Johnson faced the daunting task of leading the nation through the tumultuous period of Reconstruction after the American Civil War. His presidency was marked by a lenient approach toward the Southern states, which drew criticism for what was perceived as insufficient protection of the rights of newly freed African Americans. Johnson's clash with the Radical Republicans in Congress over Reconstruction policies led to his impeachment in 1868, making him the first U.S. President to be impeached. However, he narrowly avoided removal from office, as the Senate fell short of the required votes for conviction.
