Plate N.T.38, titled: Le Paralytique gueri au Lavior de Bethesda / De Geraakte by 't water van Bethesda geneezen (The paralytic healed by the water of Bethesda). Joann.V.1-9. This plate shows: a man walking with his mat. He was paralyzed but Jesus, who is standing next to him, told him to stand up and pick up his mat. In the background is the pool Bethesda in which people heal. There is also an angel in the background. Original etching/engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: This plate originates from: 'Tableaux de vieux et nouveau testament. / Afbeeldzels van 't oude en nieuwe testament.' (transl: Images of the old and new testament.), published in Amsterdam by Francois Halma, 1710. This bible is generally refered to as the Scheits print-bible, after the artist who designed the plates.Artists and Engravers: Few plates have reference to the engraver or artist. Some have J. Lamsveld or A. van Buysen or T. Doesburgh indicated as the engraver after M. Scheits. Matthias Scheits (c. 1625-c. 1700) was a German painter and draughtsman. He studied in Hamburg and in the northern Netherlands, where he was a pupil of Philips Wouwerman. His approach to painting was sketchy, divesting his subjects of solemnity and pomp. The generally cheerful scenes are surrounded by dimly lit space with an atmospheric landscape. His works include familiar Dutch genre themes, soldiers at their encampment, music at home, but he also executed religious subjects, notably in 152 drawings for engravings for this illustrated Bible. Condition: Very good, given age. A dampstain in the top margin (not affecting image). Small stains in the left margin. Faint stain in the image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. Storage location: C249-25 The overall size is ca. 7.7 x 9.6 inch. The image size is ca. 6.9 x 8.7 inch. The overall size is ca. 19.5 x 24.5 cm. The image size is ca. 17.5 x 22 cm. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 37482
