By Ebenezer Sibly . London . 1790.Artists and Engravers: Nicholas Culpeper (1616 - 1654) was an English botanist, physician, and astrologer. He was the son of Nicholas Culpeper, a clergyman. He studied in Cambridge, and afterwards became apprenticed to an apothecary. He ran a pharmacy in the Halfway House in Spitalfields, London. He published A Complete Herbal and English Physician Enlarged and The English Physician and Family Dispensary. He was a radical republican and opposed to the "closed shop" of medicine. He believed that the use of Latin by doctors, lawyers and priests was a conspiracy to keep power and freedom away from the general public. He died of tuberculosis at the young age of 38. Ebenezer Sibly (1751-1799) was an English physician, astrologer and prolific writer on the occult. He is celebrated for the natal horoscope he cast of the United States of America, published in 1787 and still cited. He joined the Freemasons in 1784. He published the New and Complete Illustration of the Occult Sciences in four volumes, from 1784. As an astrologer he is said to have used the Placidian system. As a student of alchemy, he translated Bernard of Treviso (the fountain allegory). Condition: Fine. General age related toning. Small holes from binding in right margin edge.
