Antique Master Print, untitled. View of a beached ship. Very nice example of a softground etching. Landscape. Softground etching on wove paper. Watermark: 1817 Made by 'William Pengree Sherlock' after 'Samuel Prout'. William Pengree Sherlock (*1775) worked in London as a graphic artist. Samuel Prout (1783 - 1852) was one of the masters of British watercolour architectural painting. Prout secured the position of Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary to King George IV in 1829 and afterwards to Queen Victoria. Prout is often compared to his contemporaries; Turner, Gainsborough, Constable and Ruskin, whom he taught. He made several very popular sets of cityviews and landscapes. Good, given age. No margins. Remains of glue and paper from previous attachment on rear. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
