Antique print, titled: 'Entree de Sancho dans l' Isle de Barataria', ('Entry of Sancho on the Barataria Isle'). Sancho is carried on the shoulders of two men into a town. A scene from Cervantes' novel Don Quichote, depiction Don Quichote's hallucinatory perception of the world. Line engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: From a series of engravings illustrating Don Quichote, probably based on a series of 28 tapestries that Coypel designed for Gobelins. This highly succesful series was produced continuously between 1714 and 1794.Artists and Engravers: Made by N. Tardieu after Car. Coypel. Charles-Antoine Coypel (1694-1752) was a French painter, art commmentator and playwright. He was the son of Antoine Coypel and grandson of Noel Coypel. Nicolas Henri Tardieu (1674-1749) also called 'Tardieu the elder' was a prominent French engraver, known for his sensitive reproductions of Antoine Watteau's paintings. He was appointed graveur du roi (King's Engraver) to King Louis XV of France. Condition: Good, given age. Paper damage in left and right upper corners.
