Antique Master Print, titled: 'The Polling. Plate III.' - Satirical print on the corruption endemic in parliamentary elections in the 18th century (before the Great Reform Act). This shows a large group of people come to vote. A few hold pamphlets showing a hanged man. Corruption is indicated by a dying man being brought to vote, as well as a mentally disabled man. In the background a woman in a coach represents Britannia. Her coachmen are gambling and ignore that the coach is broken. Etching/engraving on wove (vellin) paper. Description: the series "The Humours of an Election", originally painted in 1755 and the prints published in 1758. These engravings are from "The Works of William Hogarth", published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy in 1822 with the original plates restored by James Heath, engraver to His Majesty. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All 'Hogarth' prints appearing after this date are copies of these original plates. The earlier plates published by Cook between 1796-1803 are made after Hogarth and not the original plates by Hogarth. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'William Hogarth' after an anonymous artist. Engraved by Hogarth and Francois Morellon de la Cave (Le Cave). William Hogarth (1697-1764) was an reknown English painter, printmaker, social critic and cartoonist. Condition: Very good, given age. Scattered small stains in the margin. Paper weak on the upper pllatemark. A dampstain in the lower left, just beside the image.
