This plate 'La Sculpture / Die Bildhauer Kunst' (Sculpture) shows a sculptor contemplating how to finish a bust of a noble person in progress. In his hands he holds a hammer and chisel. Behind the artist a young apprentice is preparing a block of stone for sculpting. Rare. Original line etching and mezzotint engraving on a verge type handlaid paper. Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre (1713/14-1789) was a French painter, drawer and administrator. From 1770 to 1789 he was Premier peintre du Roi. Condition: Good, given age. A tear with ink staining in the center of the plate, backed with paper and acid-free archival tape. Folding near middle. A crease in the lower left corner, as well as the upper right corner.
