Title: 'Marten Harpertz Tromp. Ridder. Lt. Admiraal van Holland en Westvriesland.' (Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp. Knight. Lt. Admiral of Holland and Westfriesland.). Maarten Tromp (1598-1653) was an admiral in the Dutch Navy. Original etching and engraving combination on a verge type hand laid paper. 100% original and authentic. Description: This attractive original old antique print / plate originates from: 'Geschiedenis der Vereenigde Nederlanden.', published 1730-1738. Before that published in French in 1728: 'Histoire des Provinces-Unies des Pays-Bas.' Artists and Engravers: The author of this work is Jean Le Clerc / Joannes Clericus (1657-1736). From Hugenot origin, he studied filosophy, hebrew and theology in Geneva and travelled in Europe. He objected the calvinistic orthodoxie and influenced by Grotius, Episcopius, Van Limborch and others, he moved to Amsterdam, where he became a Remonstrant. He became a professor at the Remonstrant seminary, a writer and publisher. This plate is engraved by Bernard Picart (1673-1733). He was a French painter. He was born in Paris and died in Amsterdam.
