Plate 4: This plate shows King Louis XIII and de Pluvinel watching the training of the horses by Mr. De Potrincourt and others. The decorative architectural border representing columns and a frieze are printed seperately from the image in the middle. On this plate the border is a woodcut image. The middle engraving is a copperplate engraving. The paper is a verge type hand laid watermarked paper. Absolutely authentic. Description: This scarse antique print originates from: 'Le Manège Royal - L'Instruction du Roy, en L'Exercice de Monter a Cheval.' (Translation: The Royal Riding School -- The Instruction of the King in Horseback Riding Exercises.) by Antoine de Pluvinel, first published in Paris, France: c. 1623-26 and in later 17th. c. editions. We do not know the exact edition of this plate.Artists and Engravers: The author Antoine de Pluvinel (French 1555-1620) was the riding instructor of King Louis XIII of France. Engraver is Crispijn de Passe II (Dutch c. 1597-c. 1670). This work is considered some of his finest work. Condition: Excellent; General age related toning. Some falso fold lines from binding near middle fold. Somewhat weaker fold line at lower left backes by acis free tape as a precaution. Please study scan carefully.
