Plate: Andernach and Neuwied. With a height of 321 metres the Drachenfels mountain is not the highest one, but it is definitely the most famous mountain of the Siebengebirge. According to Karl Simrock, an expert regarding the Nibelungs legend, it is right here where Siegfried�s fight with the dragon took place. Original colour aquatint etching with hand colouring on a vellin type paper. Several plates with the early issue watermarks 1817 and 1818, and all plates before numbers. Each of the plates except those depicting Mainz and Biberich match Tooley's first state. According to Ackermann's advertisements for the work, discussed fully by Abbey, this is one of 750 copies printed on 'large wove Elephant Vellum Paper' and 50 large paper copies were published in six monthly parts from October, 1819, to March, 1820. Gerning's first edition appeared at Wiesbaden in 1819, but it was not illustrated. A later German edition was published in 1822 at Frankfurt, containing 24 views. This Ackermann edition represents the first edition in English and the first illustrated edition. The Havell family of Reading, Berkshire, England included a number of notable engravers, etchers and painters, as well as writers, publishers, educators, and musicians. In particular, members of this family were among the foremost practitioners of aquatint; and had a long association with Indian art and culture. They are the English descendants of the aristocratic Hauteville family of Normandy. Condition: Very good considering it's age. General age related toning and light thumbing from handling.
