Original print, titled: 'Appenzeil. Herissaw.'. It shows: two bird's eye views of the Swiss towns of Appenzell and Herissaw. Both are lovingly detailed, showing houses churches and local rivers. Copperplate engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: This print originates from 'Archontologia Cosmica', 1649. Artists and Engravers: Engraved by Matthias Merian after Johann Ludwig Gottfried. Matthaus II Merian (1621-1687) was a leading German engraver of the day, from a prominent family of engravers and artists, and the father of Maria Merian. Johann Ludwig Gottfried (1584-1633) was a German theologist, translator, author, publisher and corrector. Condition: Very good, given age. Original middle fold, as issued. The middle fold starting form the top margin (closed with acid-free archival tape). Margins cropped to the platemark. Paper erosion and a small hole in the top right corner of the image.
