Antique print, titled: 'The Conversion of Sergius Paulus the Proconsul - Le Proconsul Serge Paul converti au Seigneur - De Stadthouder Sergius Paulus tot den Heere bekeert. Acts. XIII.6-12.' - Barnabas and Saul before the Roman governor Sergius Paulus. The governor's attendant, the Jewish sorceror and false prophet Bar-Jesus (Elymas the sorceror), has just been blinded by Saul. Acts 13:6-12. Engraving on hand laid paper. Description: From 'Tafereelen des Ouden en Nieuwen Testaments […] Tableaux du Vieux & Nouveaux Testament.' Published in Amsterdam by Josua and Reinier Ottens, 1754. In this ed. the captions in English, in addition to the titles in French and Dutch, were added above the image. Ref: IconClass 73F22313(1).Artists and Engravers: Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Matthias Scheits'. Matthias Scheits (c. 1625-c. 1700) was a German painter and draughtsman. He studied in Hamburg and in the northern Netherlands, where he was a pupil of Philips Wouwerman. His approach to painting was sketchy, divesting his subjects of solemnity and pomp. The generally cheerful scenes are surrounded by dimly lit space with an atmospheric landscape. His works include familiar Dutch genre themes, soldiers at their encampment, music at home, but he also executed religious subjects, notably in 152 drawings for engravings for this illustrated Bible. Condition: Good, given age. Print attached to carrier sheet. Carrier a little foxed and with a few small tears in the lower margin. Image faintly soiled.
