Antique print, titled: 'Fontispiece: Iesu Christo, Fideli Militantis Ecclesiae Imperatori'. Title page to the work. It shows the title centrally, with Christ holding the cross above, Saint Peter and Saint Paul the Apostle. Below the title sits the Virgin Mother holding a cross in one hand, and a book with papal tiara on it above which the dove that signifies the Holy Spirit. Mary holds the cahins of two prisoners: Medusa and a Roman soldier (signifying the end of the Classical period, and the beginning of Christianity). Original etching/engraving on e verge type handlaid paper. Description: This title page originates from: 'Iesu Christo, Fideli Militantis Ecclesiae Imperatori' by Pieter Soutman (Haarlem., 1650). Rare.Artists and Engravers: Engraved after P. Soutmannus after his won design. Pieter Claesz Soutman (c. 1595-1657) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker. He was a contemporary of Frans Hals, Hendrick Pot and Pieter Claesz, and was influenced by all three. This print as the other prints in this work was probably engraved by C. Visscher. Cornelis Visscher (Haarlem 1629-1658) was a Dutch Golden Age engraver, and the brother of Jan de Bisscher. He was a pupil of Soutman. Condition: Good, given age. Original middle fold, as issued. Small tears in the bottom margin (not affecting image, closed with contemporary paper and acid-free paper). Margins foxed and a little browned.
