Antique print, titled: First stage of Cruelty. It shows several groups of young boys torturing animals: one ties a bone to a dog's tail, another tries to forcibly insert a rod into a dog's behind, two boys burn out a pigeon's eyes, a laughing group hangs two kittens by their tails, while one cat with makeshift wings is thrown from a window. Amidst this is one 'Youth of gentler Heart' who wants to give up his tart to save a dog. Etching and engraving on a vellin type paper. Description: Separately published master print. Thomas Cook (1744-1818) was a London engraver. Thomas was a student of Ravenet, the well-known French engraver who resided in London at the time. He has copied the entire engraved work of Hogarth, which was published under the name 'Hogarth Restored' from 1806. William Hogarth (1697-1764) was an English painter, printmaker, social critic and cartoonist.� Condition: Excellent, given age. Scattered mild soiling in the margins.
