Antique print, titled: 'Lof Minnaars vanden dagh, uwe Lievers vanden nacht, De prijser van het licht, de duysterheyt veracht.' - ('Praise lovers of the day, you lovers of the night; he who praises the light despises darkness'). A mole (lover of the night) and an eagle (lover of day) in a landscape. This emblem relates to the differences between the earthly and the heavenly, and how banishing earthly desires from the heart leads to the heavenly. Etching on hand laid paper. Description: From: The first edition of Jan van Veen's very popular work "Zinne-Beelden oft Adams Appel." Amsterdam: Everhard Cloppenburgh, 1642. This first edition was the only edition to include the French diptychs below each emblem, and the only edition in this larger (4to) size. This popular series describes an ironic description of Dutch contemporary morality, attractively illustrated by landscape / genre scenes in a painterly style. Several later ed. were published. Salomon Savery (1594-ca. 1665) was a Dutch artist, nephew of Roelant Savery. He was one of the most prolific printmakers associated with book illustration in 17th century Netherlands. Condition: Very good, given age. Right margin uneven from binding. Left margin cropped to just over the platemark, with minimal loss of the left edge of the image.
