Beschreibung
Antique print, titled: 'Voor die sich staagh tot Godt begeeven, Baardt hier de Doodt het eeuwigh leeven.' - ('For those who steadily live their life in service of God, Death causes eternal life'). Moralistic emblem arguing that one should lead one's life in the service of the Lord in order to attain a place in Heaven. In the image a couple walks past a house where an unlit lantern is hung outside the door. According to the poem accompanying this emblem, this was a custom in Deventer and other Dutch cities along the river IJssel, to show that someone died in that house (as in, the light of a life has left in this house). Etching on hand laid paper. Description: From: The first edition of Jan van Veen's very popular work "Zinne-Beelden oft Adams Appel." Amsterdam: Everhard Cloppenburgh, 1642. This first edition was the only edition to include the French diptychs below each emblem, and the only edition in this larger (4to) size. This popular series describes an ironic description of Dutch contemporary morality, attractively illustrated by landscape / genre scenes in a painterly style. Several later ed. were published. Ref: Praz 522-3; Landwehr, Emblem & Fable 842; Visser 507.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Salomon Savery' after an anonymous artist.
