Antique print, titled: 'L' Aventure de Philopoemen.' - ('The Discovery of Philopoemen'). In the works of Plutarch, Philopoemen was a strategist and general of the Aequian League that fought against Sparta. He visited the city of Megara, and because of his humble appearance, the lady of the house confused him with a servant and put him to work. This scene depicts the moment when the husband realizes the general s true identity, under whose modest appearance is hidden the grandeur of his personality. Engraving / etching on hand laid paper. Description: "Galerie du Palais Royal .", Paris: J. Couche & J. Bouilliard, [n.d., 1786-1808]. This series of plates depict the collection of the Royal Palace in Paris. Each plate is set in a decorative border and accompanied by a descriptive text (by l'Abbe de Fontenal), describing the artist and painting. The author Jacques Couche (1759-1836), was a French engraver, student of Levasseur. Ref: IconClass 98B(PHILOPOEMEN)51.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'C.N. Varin' after 'Peter Paul Rubens'. Charles Nicolas Varin (1745-1805) was a French engraver. Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was a famous baroque painter and diplomat from Flanders. He ran a large workshop in Antwerp. His work was reproduced in print many times. Condition: Very good, given age. Margin edges uneven as issued. Two original pinholes from binding in left margin. Small stains in print and margin.
