Antique print, titled: 'Indienmen Midas wil tot eenen Rechter kiesen, Gewonnen ist met Pan, Apollo moet verliesen.' - ('If Midas is chosen as judge, Pan will win and Apollo lose'). A donkey is seated on the judge's chair, judging a dispute between various animals. This emblem comments on how a country is only a virtuous as its leader: "hoe dwaaltmen op de wegh wanneer de leydtsman blint is" (How one wanders on the roads when the conductor is blind). Etching on hand laid paper. Description: From: The first edition of Jan van Veen's very popular work "Zinne-Beelden oft Adams Appel." Amsterdam: Everhard Cloppenburgh, 1642. This first edition was the only edition to include the French diptychs below each emblem, and the only edition in this larger (4to) size. This popular series describes an ironic description of Dutch contemporary morality, attractively illustrated by landscape / genre scenes in a painterly style. Several later ed. were published. Salomon Savery (1594-ca. 1665) was a Dutch artist, nephew of Roelant Savery. He was one of the most prolific printmakers associated with book illustration in 17th century Netherlands. Condition: Very good, given age. Right margin uneven from binding. The left margin cropped just over the platemark, with a little loss of image. Minimal paper loss in the lower right margin.
