Plate: Doctor Syntax amused with Pat in the Pond. Original handcoloured aquatint on velin type paper. Description: This print originates from: William Combe's "The Tour[s] of Doctor Syntax, In Search of the Picturesque; In Search of Consolation; In Search of a Wife". These three hugely popular volumes of satire were first published by R. Ackermann from London in 1812-1821, and are the most popular product of Rowlandson and Combe's collaboration. Its popularity was immediate and very great. The figure of the lean curate and schoolmaster in his scratch wig and his rusty black suit, with his long nose and chin, caught the public fancy; and, doubtless, the device of representing him as a man of learning and of some dignity added to the fun of the ridiculous mishaps into which he fell. In the character of Syntax, Combe attempted to combine Don Quixote with parson Adams; and succeeded that Syntax remains popular to this day.Artists and Engravers: Designed and engraved by Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827).
