Antique print, titled: ''t En is geen Mannen-hart te slaan een teder wijf, veel min zyn eygen Vrouw (de helfte van zyn lijf).' - ('It is not manly to hit a tender woman, let alone his own wife (his other half)'). Beside a statue of Artemis, a spider in its web crawls toward a fly that got caught. This emblem argues against the domestic tyrant who, while laughing when outside the house, meanwhile mistreats his spouse. Etching on hand laid paper. Description: From: The first edition of Jan van Veen's very popular work "Zinne-Beelden oft Adams Appel." Amsterdam: Everhard Cloppenburgh, 1642. This first edition was the only edition to include the French diptychs below each emblem, and the only edition in this larger (4to) size. This popular series describes an ironic description of Dutch contemporary morality, attractively illustrated by landscape / genre scenes in a painterly style. Several later ed. were published. Salomon Savery (1594-ca. 1665) was a Dutch artist, nephew of Roelant Savery. He was one of the most prolific printmakers associated with book illustration in 17th century Netherlands. Condition: Very good, given age. Right margin uneven from binding. Left margin cropped to just over the platemark, with minimal loss of the left edge of the image.
