Antique print, titled: 'V'Ovrichteyt zyt onderdaan, Want s'heeft van God haar macht ontfaan.' - ('Ovricheyt, even you are just a subject, for your power was given by God'). Three hunters with their dogs are hunting a wolf. This emblem argues that no matter how powerful a ruler is, he is still below the Lord and must ultimately answer to Him. Ovricheyt is apparently a historic figure from Roman times, although we have been unable to find more on this. Etching on hand laid paper. Description: From: The first edition of Jan van Veen's very popular work "Zinne-Beelden oft Adams Appel." Amsterdam: Everhard Cloppenburgh, 1642. This first edition was the only edition to include the French diptychs below each emblem, and the only edition in this larger (4to) size. This popular series describes an ironic description of Dutch contemporary morality, attractively illustrated by landscape / genre scenes in a painterly style. Several later ed. were published. Salomon Savery (1594-ca. 1665) was a Dutch artist, nephew of Roelant Savery. He was one of the most prolific printmakers associated with book illustration in 17th century Netherlands. Condition: Very good, given age. Right margin uneven from binding. Left margin cropped close to the platemark. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
