Plate 1.: 'Ghedaente van den Dorados met de Vliegende Vis.' This plate shows 4 types of fish: 'Een vliegende vis 1 1/4 voet.' (Flying fish, 1,5 feet), 'Een Doorado 6 voeten lanck.' ( A Dorado 6 feet long. The mahi-mahi commonly known as dolphin-fish. In other languages it is known as rakingo, calitos, maverikos, dorado, or lampuka.), 'Alba Cooretta.' (of Coretta alba Pisonis or Tunny.), 'Alba Coorza lanck 18 palmen dick 10 palmen.' (Alba coorza length 18 palms thick 10 palms.) As seen by the Dutch explorers in 1607. Copperplate engravings on a verge type hand laid paper. Description: This is an extremely rare print / copperplate engraving from: 'Historische ende Iournaelsche Aentekeningh, van 't gene Pieter van den Broecke op sijne Reysen, soo van Cabo Verde, Angola, Gunea en Oost-Indien voorghevallen is. (Pieter van den Broecke: Voyages to West Africa and Asia 1605-1630.), which was part of the monumental work by Isaac Commelin (1598-1676) on VOC voyages: 'Begin ende voortgangh van de Vereenighde Nederlantsche Geoctroyeerde Oost-Indische Companie.', published by Joannes Janssonius, Amsterdam, 1646.Artists and Engravers: Pieter van den Broecke (1585-1640) was a Dutch cloth merchant in the service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), and one of the first Dutchmen to taste coffee. He went to Angola three times. He was one of the first Europeans to describe societies in West and Central Africa and in detail trade strategies along the African coast. He also operated in the Malay archipelago and later became head of the Banda Islands, where his family resided for 13 more generations. Engraver unknown. Condition: Fine; general age related toning and chipped paper edges from handling. Carefully study scan as this illustrates the condition well.
