State: First state of 2. Ref: FMH 354. Etching on laid paper. Watermark: Gothic P. Made by 'Frans Hogenberg' after own design. Frans / Franz Hogenberg (1535-1590) was a German / Flemish cartographer from Brabant. He drew maps for Dutch, German and English publishers. He was probably trained by his father-in-law, Hendrik Terbruggen. Hogenberg also published a great number of history prints and newsprints. Very good, given age. Small margins, some browning and thin spots verso, with a manuscript description in lower margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
