Plate: This plate shows a portrait of Gerrit Dou (1613 - 1675), also known as Gerard and Douw or Dow. He was a Dutch Golden Age painter, whose small, highly-polished paintings are typical of the Leiden fijnschilders. Etching on a verge type of hand laid paper. Description: This old antique print originates from: 'Dictionnaire des graveurs anciens et modernes depuis l'origine de la gravure, avec une notice des principales estampes qu'ils ont grav�es : suivi du Catalogue des �uvres de Jacques Jordans et de Corneille Visscher, Paris, 1767, in-8 ; re-edition, 1789. This work contains many original plates as well as some plates copied by Basan after others. This original (but cut off) plate was originally published c. 1690.Artists and Engravers: This plate by Godfried van Schalcken (1643-1706) Dutch painter and printmaker, known for his night / candle light scenes. Author: Pierre-Francois Basan (Paris 1723-1797) is a French engraver. He was a pupil of Etienne Fessard and Jean Daulle. He was principally occupied as a printseller, and published a 'Dictionnaire des Graveurs' in 1789. Condition: Good. General age-related toning. Please study scan carefully.
