The image size is ca. 5.7 x 7.9 inch.Plate XXVII: le monax. This plates shows the groundhog (Marmota monax), also known as a woodchuck or whistle-pig, or in some areas as a land-beaver, is a rodent of the family Sciuridae, belonging to the group of large ground squirrels known as marmots. These old antique prints originate from: "Histoire Naturelle Gà nà rale et Particuliere.", by de Buffon & Dauberton. Nouvelle Edition, Amsterdam J.H. Schneider, 1766. French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Buffon's views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. The engravers in this work are B. de Bakker, C. Brouwer, O. de Vries, C.F. Fritzsch (1719-c.1772), Reinier Vinkeles (1741-1816), H. Vinkeles, Mittelj, G.S., R. Oakes and Fringham after Jacques de Seve (active 1744-1788), Buvee and others. These plates are engraved by Fringham after de Seve.Condition: Fine. general age related toning. occasional faint spots / foxing as visible on scan.
