Wheble, Warwick Square, London.Artists and Engravers: Engraved and designed by Howitt. Samuel Howitt (1756-1822) was the son of a Nottinghamshire family of squires, Howitt became a professional artist specialising in Sporting subjects. He began as an amateur but due to financial difficulty he turned professional. Howitt worked at a private academy in Ealing as a drawing master early in his professional career. His first exhibition was in 1783 at the Incorporated Society of Artists, where he continued to exhibit. He married the sister of the celebrated caricaturist, Thomas Rowlandson (at times their work was draughted similarly). He drew for several Published works, such as Etchings of Animals (1803), Oriental Field Sports (1805 and later), Fables of Aesop (1809 and later) and notably for the British Sportsman. Condition: Excellent. General age related toning and light staining. Several small holes in bottom margin only, not effecting image. Small tear in bottom, effecting lettering, not effecting image, backed. Small remains of paper from previous framing on rear.
