Antique print, titled: 'Hongrois.' - Gorgeously coloured costume print (The Hungarian nobleman). Handcoloured engraving on hand laid paper. Description: This antique engraving originates from: 'Recueil de cent estampes representant differentes nations du Levant.', by Jacques Hay, published in Paris by Le Hay & Duchange, 1714. (Transl: Collection of 100 engravings representing the different Levant Nations.) This work is 'the most popular and influential illustration of Turkish dress', commissioned by Charles de Ferriol. It illustrates the regional, religious and national costume of the Turkish empire.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'J. Haussard' after 'Jean-Baptiste Vanmour'. Jean Baptiste Haussard (Dennevoux 1680-1749) was a French engraver/printmaker. Jean Baptiste Vanmour or Van Mour (1671-1737) was a Flemish-French painter, remembered for his detailed portrayal of life in the Ottoman Empire during the Tulip Era and the rule of Sultan Ahmed III. Many of his paintings are now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Condition: Very good, given age. Some scattered small stains in the margins.
