Plate : This plate shows a portrait of Jean-Michel Papillon (1698-1776), a French woodblock engraver. His brother is Jean-Baptiste-Michel Papillon (1720-1760). With whom he is often confused as the name in this woodcut illustrates because it mentions wrongfully Jean-Baptiste-Michel while it shows Jean-Michel. Woodblock print on a verge type of hand laid paper. Description: This old antique print originates from: 'Dictionnaire des graveurs anciens et modernes depuis l'origine de la gravure, avec une notice des principales estampes qu'ils ont grav�es : suivi du Catalogue des �uvres de Jacques Jordans et de Corneille Visscher, Paris, 1767, in-8 ; re-edition, 1789. Author: Pierre-Francois Basan (Paris 1723-1797) is a French engraver. He was a pupil of Etienne Fessard and Jean Daulle.
