Antique print, titled: 'De Waaerheyt over-wint de Leugen en de Zonde, De Waarheyt drijft en vlot, de Leugen moet te gronde.' - ('Truth vanquishes lies and sin; truth floats, lies must be ruined'). A swimmer beneath a bridge calls out for help in vain, because he did so numerous times before (when nothing was wrong). In English this is known as 'The Boy who cried Wolf'. The text explains that a liar is never believed, even though he sometimes speaks the truth, and that liars are often mocked and hated behind their backs. Etching on hand laid paper. Description: From: The first edition of Jan van Veen's very popular work "Zinne-Beelden oft Adams Appel." Amsterdam: Everhard Cloppenburgh, 1642. This first edition was the only edition to include the French diptychs below each emblem, and the only edition in this larger (4to) size. This popular series describes an ironic description of Dutch contemporary morality, attractively illustrated by landscape / genre scenes in a painterly style. Several later ed. were published. Condition: Very good, given age. Right margin uneven from binding. The left margin cropped, with minimal loss of image in the left side.
