Plate I: Locusta Marina - Zeekreeft (Lobster). Engraving and etching on a vellin type hand laid paper. Description: This engraved plate originates from: 'D'Amboinsche Rariteitkamer, behelzende eene beschryvinge van allerhande zoo weeke als harde schaalvisschen, te weeten raare krabben, krefften, en diergelyke zeedieren, als mede allerhande hoorntjes en schulpen, die men in d'Amboinsche Zee vindt: daar benevens zommige mineraalen, gesteenten, en soorten van aarde, die in d'Amboinsche en zommige omleggende Eilanden gevonden worden.', by Georg Everhard Rumphius, 2nd. ed. published by Jan Roman de Jonge, Amsterdam, 1741. The first ed. was published in 1705. This famous, classical work deals with marine life of the Moluccas, Indonesia.Artists and Engravers: Jorg Eberhardt (Georg Everhard) Rumph (Hanau, Germany, 1628-1702) was in the service of the Dutch East-India Company (VOC) and was settled on the isle of Ambon. He wrote about his observations and made drawings, but the greater part of his manuscripts and all his drawings got lost. He became blind in 1670, but worked on, by help of an assistant. Happily enough was part of his manuscripts copied. Rumphius became a member of the German 'Academia Naturae Curiosum' and was honourably named 'Plinius Indicus'. The plates have been used as models for other books, e.g., the starfish of plate XV in Diderot & d'Alemberts's Encyclopedie. It is only recently known that the fine plates of this work are engraved after drawings by Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717). After returning from Surinam, Merian accepted a commission to draw the illustrations for the using shells from notable Dutch collections of the period. Her drawings for Rumphius' book are in the Archives of the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. Condition: Excellent. General age related toning. Please study scan.
