Antique print, titled: 'Societatis Iesu sigillum. S.S. Cosmas & Damianus confirmatae Soc. Praestites.' - Two emblems on one sheet: 'The seal of the Society of Jesus. Saints Cosmas and Damianus, guardians of the Society's stability'. The first image shows the IHS seal (with three nails, reference to the crucifixion, below the monogram) that the Society of Jesus used to identify itself. The second emblem shows a sail ship being propelled by the wind under a band with three signs of the zodiac (Taurus, Gemini and Cancer). From Johannes Bolland's 'Imago Primi Saeculi Societatis Iesu [.]', published in Antwerp: Plantijn, 1640. A Dutch translation ('Afbeeldinghe van d'eerste eeuwe der Societeyt Iesu', transl.: Images of the first century of Jesuits) was published in the same year. Engraving and letterpress on hand laid (verge) paper. Made by 'Cornelis Galle' after 'Author: Johannes Bolland, et al'. Cornelis Galle (Flemish 1576-1650). Johannes Bolland (1596-1665). Very good, given age. The margin edges a little browned and with some soiling. A crease in the top margin, and soft creasing in the lower margin. Left margin uneven and with some creases, from binding. Images clean. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
