Antique print, titled: 'The wise, and foolish virgins. Matth. XXV.1-12.' - An illustration to the Parable of the Ten Virgins. The wise virgins, who brought oil for their lamps, are let into the bridegroom's house, while the foolish virgins are sent to the market. Matthew 25:1-13. Engraving on hand laid paper. Description: From 'Tafereelen des Ouden en Nieuwen Testaments […] Tableaux du Vieux & Nouveaux Testament.' Published in Amsterdam by Josua and Reinier Ottens, 1754. In this ed. the captions in English, in addition to the titles in French and Dutch, were added above the image. Ref: IconClass 73C8413.Artists and Engravers: Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Matthias Scheits'. Matthias Scheits (c. 1625-c. 1700) was a German painter and draughtsman. He studied in Hamburg and in the northern Netherlands, where he was a pupil of Philips Wouwerman. His approach to painting was sketchy, divesting his subjects of solemnity and pomp. The generally cheerful scenes are surrounded by dimly lit space with an atmospheric landscape. His works include familiar Dutch genre themes, soldiers at their encampment, music at home, but he also executed religious subjects, notably in 152 drawings for engravings for this illustrated Bible. Condition: Very good, given age. Some faint stains and soiling in the margins. Flattened creases in the left margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
