Antique print, titled: 'Filialis Amoris Monumentum.' - This print shows a bust of Ernest of Saxony. Ernest I, called "Ernest The Pious" (Altenburg, 1601 Gotha, 1675), was a duke of Saxe-Gotha and Saxe-Altenburg. The image includes allegorical figures of Faith and Justice, as well as Memento Mori themes. Mourning putti and a weeping caryatid further reinforce the theme of death. This print comes from a memorial book for Ernest of Saxony. Engraving on wove paper. Description: The frontispiece to "Wolverdiente Ehren-Seule dem weyland durchlauchtigsten Fursten und Herrn Herrn Ernst Hertzogen zu Sachsen, Julich, Cleve und Bergk, Landgrafen zu Thuringen, Marckgrafen zu Meissen, Gefursteten Grafen zu Henneberg, Grafen zu der Marck und Ravensberg, Herrn zu Ravenstein, ec. Aufgerichtet zum Friedenstein." Gotha: Reyher, 1678.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Joachim Sandrart' after an anonymous artist. Joachim Sandrart (German; 1606-1688) was a painter, printmaker and author from Frankfurt am Main. He travelled to the Netherlands, Rome and England, before settling in Ingolstadt. Condition: Good, given age. Original folds, as issued. Folds restored on rear. Left margin cropped to just over the image edge, remargined for framing (using contemporary paper backed with acid free archival tape).
