This plate shows a portrait of Rudolf I (also known as Rudolf of Habsburg) (1218 - 1291), King of the Romans from 1273 until his death. Rudolf was the first of the count-kings, so-called by the historian Bernd Schneidmuller. He played a vital role in raising the Habsburg dynasty to a leading position among the Imperial feudal dynasties. Engraving on a verge type of hand-laid paper.
