Antique print, titled: 'A ship on fire, which a night scene exhibits to the greatest Advantage.' - This print shows a fire on a ship at night. Mezzotint engraving on hand laid paper. Description: Plate 6 from a series published by Robert Sayer in London, ca. 1750.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Richard Houston' after 'Willem van de Velde II'. Richard Houston (c.1721-1775) was an Irish mezzotint engraver who worked in London for most of his career. He was a pupil of John Brooks. His major works are after Sir Joshua Reynolds and plates after Rembrandt. Willem van de Velde II (1633-1707) was a Dutch marine painter and draughtsman. Condition: Good, given age. Margins cropped close to the image edge. Small stain on right side of print. A few tiny spots of surface damage in the image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
