Antique print, titled: 'Insectorum Aquatilium Classis I. Tab. XXXI. Hirudo Piscium. Tab XXXII.' - Two images on one sheet. Tab. XXXI: 'De kleine, blinkende, zwarte en stinkende Water-Kever' (The small, shiny and smelly Water Beetle). This probably depicts species from the family Hydroscaphidae or Skiff Beetles. Tab XXXII. 'De Vis-Egel of Bloedzuiger' (The Fish-Hedgehog or Leech). Various views of Piscicola geometra, or another species from the Piscicolida. From the Third volume, First Part (Derde deels, Ie Stuk) of "De Natuurlyke Historie der Insecten […]". Commentary and text for this work were written by C.F.C. Kleemann. Haarlem and Amsterdam: C.H. Rosel van Rosenhof' after own design. Augustus Johannes Rosel von Rosenhof (1705-59) was a German miniature painter, and naturalist and entomologist. Roesel studied painting with his father and uncle, and later with the renowned Preisler in Nuremberg. While living in Copenhagen, he became inspired by the work of Maria Sibylla Merian. He returned to Nuremberg to devote himself largely to entomological studies and illustration, aided by his wife who hand colored his drawings and his son in law, who assisted in the publishing of his superbly illustrated scientific works. Roesel also did much of the engraving for his works. Very good, given age. Some faint soiling and/or staining in the margin edges. Image faintly browned. Faint offsetting of the opposite text page.
