In a square filled with soldiers, two men try yo pull out the hairs from a horse's tail. One man tries to pull out the tail at once, while the other man succeeds by pulling the hairs out one by one. Thus, the strength of the group is illustrated (the hairs cannot be pulled all at once). From: 'La Doctrine des Moeurs [â ¦]' printed by Louys Sevestre for Pierre Daret, Paris, 1646. First edition. Author: Marin le Roy de Gomberville. Made by order of Mazarin for the instruction of the young Louis XIV. The plates are copies in reverse after Otto van Veen's emblems in 'Q. A wormhole in the top left margin corner, closed with comtemporary paper, not affecting image. Small stain in left margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
