Plate;' Willem de I. (view of the count of Holland Willem I. Willem I was the second son of Count Floris III and Ada of Huntingdon and he spent his childhood in the family of his mother in Scotland. In 1189 Wilem accompanied his father in the Third Crusade. His father died in 1190 during the crusade itself and Willem during his retreat in France captured. He returned in 1191 in Holland and got back out with his older brother Dirk VII his father as Count Floris III of Holland had succeeded. Willem therefore sought the support of the insurgent Frisians. Dirk because at that time could not get away from Zeeland he sent his wife Aleid with an army to West Friesland. In November 1195 it came to a confrontation between Aleid and her brother Willem.
