Beschreibung
The Battle of Antietam, fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, stands as a pivotal moment in the American Civil War. Commanded by General George McClellan, the Union Army clashed with General Robert E. Lee's Confederate forces in what became the bloodiest single-day battle in U.S. history. The conflict unfolded across key landmarks like the Cornfield, Sunken Road, and Burnside Bridge, each witnessing intense and brutal fighting. Despite heavy casualties on both sides, the battle ended inconclusively, with neither the Union nor the Confederacy achieving a decisive victory. However, the strategic stalemate prompted President Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, transforming the war's purpose by declaring the emancipation of slaves in Confederate-held territories. The Battle of Antietam, marked by its staggering human toll and historical significance, played a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of the Civil War. Published by Johnson Fry & Co.
